The power of visibility: Participatory Video for social change in Gujarat, India

Abstract

Even as electronic media and the Internet sectors are undergoing a sea change, spaces for grassroots communities have been gradually shrinking.  This article examines the manner in which participatory video can serve as an enabling and empowering tool for women. Taking Video SEWA in Gujarat as an example, it examines how participatory can help create awareness and be an effective tool in advocacy. It concludes that such grassroots coalitions are helping women constructing democratic collective spaces for themselves and develop their own narratives, voice their concerns, express their identities, and mobilize for social change.
